New House Factoids

  • Lowe’s and Home Depot now posess a freaking tractor-beam like magnetic pull.  I can FEEL them assimilating me, just like the Borg.
  • First thing we “cooked”: Kraft mac ‘n cheese (high class, huh?)
  • Number of times we’ve ordered pizza for delivery since we got here: 3
  • Items unpacked and put away in our huge master closet so far(including clothes!): about 5
  • Number of times we’ve watered the poor scraggly back lawn: 0
  • Spaces that I’m totally in love (obsessed) with: the Harry Potter-esque pantry, and the upstairs laundry room
  • Number of hours before we had DVR service going, and everything connected/working: approx 2 hours after the movers left.  (not that we really have had much time to watch TV, but you know, DVR is pretty damn important)
  • Neighborhood annoyances so far: a yippy dog that lives behind us and has a tendency to bark outside until 3 or 4am some nights.  Also, one weekend night, there was a party next door with some mexican polka music going until 5am.  Seriously.
  • Daily commute time: 15 minutes or less one way (KICK-ASS!)
  • There are outlets and light switches EVERYWHERE.  We are not used to this gluttony of electric control, compared to the old house where we probably were violating 18 different fire codes.
  • Number of fans we used to have running at the old place 24/7: 8
  • Number of fans we have set up at the new place: 0
  • That last factoid is slightly misleading, because here we have several ceiling fans which are totally awesome, btw.  But we haven’t needed to supplement with any noisy hurricane or stand fans.  Because, you know, the A/C actually WORKS.
  • A momentous occurence: George has retired, and I was actually able to drink lemonade the other day without severe pain!
  • We are really happy and excited to be here, and I’m sure that isn’t apparent at all from this list.

Back on the Wagon

subtitle: moving sucks!

I mean, don’t get me wrong and all, getting the house loan sealed up and moving into a house that is actually not 95° is totally awesome.  It’s the getting-there part that really sucks.  And in almost satiric progression, I got sick the week of the move, K got sick the week after, and two nights ago FF started coughing his head off.  It is a really bad bug, referred to in our house as “the evil duck soup”.  Don’t ask me why, we’re just weird like that.

Some highlights over the last 10 days (pictures to follow tomorrow or whenever I get enough brain power):

  • After a few delays, we got our beautiful, most awesome, perfect refrigerator and washer/dryer set.  I never knew I could be so excited over appliances!  Another HUGE THANKS to Aunt D for making the magic happen!  I get a little thrill every single time I look at those sexy stainless steel french doors!
  • A big HUGE giant enormous, karma-points-forever THANK YOU to Gmom, Uncle Bubba, and K2′s big bro for taking over the not-so-fun task of finishing up the post-mover move and facilitating clean up of the old place.  Could not have done it without you guys.  Now if we can just find the bottom of the living room, and the garage.  Maybe in 2010.
  • It’s that most magical, inspirational time of year…no not the holidays, but the first couple weeks of the semester…dear god, work is making me into a Z-O-M-B-I-E (brainzzzzzzzz…..) Also, only 5 more days until my courses start again too.  (sob)
  • We only have 2 chairs to go with the dining room table, and no nightstands for our bedroom.  Technically K also needs a new dresser.  Urg.
  • And lastly but not leastly, we have increased our family with the addition of one small, furry crittur.  FF has been promising me that once we got into our house, I could have a cat, since our last cat totally abandoned us and went to live with UB, the furry traitor.  A friend at work was looking for a home for a beautiful, friendly, calm kitten so we went ahead and adopted her.  She came home with us today and she is so adorable, and doing so great with K.  They played with each other for about 5 hours straight until the kitten was literally staggering around from exhaustion!  K is partial to the name “Cookie”, but the jury is still out.  Before we ever saw her, FF was already rooting for “Bouillabaisse”, or “Foie Gras” but yeah, maybe not.

Ugh

ugh

So, it’s all like, “YAY, new house, yada yada yada!”

…And then the next day, you are still ridiculously sick with bronchitis or possibly pneumonia, and your kitchen looks like THAT (see above), and you have a mini fridge masquerading as a full size, which actually looks kind of funny….

WE DID IT!

perseverance

After months of torturous delays, the genesis of George, and other assorted unbelievable shenanigans, we are FINALLY homeowners!  So today felt a lot like this:

But now…we have 2 days to finish packing the house.  Double OH-EM-GEE.  And I have come down with bronchitis. :(

Friday Misc

Yeah, daily posts are way out of my league right now and I find that to be sooo pathetic.  But hey, constraints are constraints, self imposed or not.

Anyhoo, the house thing is moving along but we still don’t know the exact timing on when the deal will be sealed up and the keys to the kingdom get handed over.  Probably sometime towards the end of next week.  Guess we better REALLY try to motivate and push through the heat-induced lethargy and try to get the rest of our junk packed.  I so wish that I would just, like, wake up tomorrow and it would be December, and a lovely 50°, partly cloudy day.  Sigh, I can dream.

Took the day off today to do a hundred and fify errands, and the bright spot was GETTING OUR NEW FRIDGE ORDERED!  I don’t know why this is like the most exciting part about the new house, but I am really stoked.  Silly, ridiculous, I know but somehow it makes me feel like…wow, we really OWN something.  A huge, HUGE thanks goes out to Aunt D for all her help.  You have no idea how happy you made me today.

So long, you lying, scoundrel Sprint wireless b*stards!  My contract was up last week and today I went and got my new iPhone and ported my # over. Not that I have any illusions about the corporate practices of AT&T wireless.  But hey, I figure after 9 years with Sprint, it’s time to let some other company piss me off for awhile.  Plus, iPhone, HELLO!  Family share plan with work-affiliation discount is way cheaper too, even with the data plan.  All in all, a win-win, I think, and K now has TWO iPhones to kill batteries on while playing games.

K is pretty much over her little cold, but still coughing a wee bit, and has been more restless than usual while sleeping.  (FF would say VERY restless, as evidenced by the thrashing knees and feet invading his side of the bed.)

I have discovered that quite possibly one of the cutest things in the world is K singing and dancing to Laurie Berkner music videos.  Recently, Noggin ran a 1 hour special of her music videos and so we DVR’d it.  K and I have been rocking out all week!  Her favorite song…”I’m not perfect”.  She sings it perfectly!  Ironic, isn’t it?
