Random Updates

….we are this |   | close to being homeowners.  We had a few more last minute delays but they are not on our side of the fence, so to speak, and so now it is just a case of waiting for a few more repairs to the house and then we will be able to close it up and move in!  HALLELUJAH!  and it only took approximately 5 months!

….Since returning from her little jaunt up to Gmom’s, K has pretty much been sleeping through the nights, without her traditional 4-6 am wakeup daddy page to come in our room.  Coincidence?  Memorex?  I dunno but I’ll take what I can get!  Hoping the trend will continue but doubt this brief respite of reliable sleeping will survive the trauma of moving.

….K has officially been bottle-free since a couple weeks before our Vegas vacation.  And we received way less resistance than I expected, which tells me that (thankfully) she really was ready, and I don’t need to make a large deposit in her therapy fund for traumatically forcing her to relinquish her beloved bottles.  She still likes to have a wee cup o’ milk somewhere in the evening hours  (so she is still not staying dry all the way until morning) but I’m very proud of her.  And a little sad too.  All the last little shreds of babyhood life are rapidly being replaced with trappings of a busy, happy, child who is going to grow into an amazing adult in the blink of an eye, I’m sure.  Sniff.

….Speaking of moving, my work offices have finally been consolidated into our brand new downtown building.  I like having shiny new digs, but I admit, I will always fondly miss my old office in the decrepit, haunted, bug & rat infested building where I spent about 6 happy years.  I haven’t gotten all my personal little flamingo decos put back up, but other than that I’m pretty well moved in.  Our dept. was very fortunate in terms of space allocation and we also got a very large, wonderful workroom for all our tech. equipment.  It’s like Disneyland!  I just wish I weren’t so damn behind from the move, the vacation, and being shorthanded.  If only I could find the bottom of my inbox…..

….Our summer off-season TV obsession this year has been catching up on prior seasons of NCIS.  I wrote here about my originally conflicted relationship with this show and I’m happy to report that with successful counseling, we have reconciled.   Catching up on back seasons has made things a lot easier to follow.  Sometimes I still get a little lost on the plot lines, but fortunately FF patiently untangles me.  He’s the best hubby!  (and I still have a major girl-crush on Abby.)

….I am DREADING the fall semester and getting back to school.   Originally I intended to take two summer classes, and keep up my momentum and motivation, but with all the house stuff and other random unpredictability, I had to change plans and drop them (gee darn).  The break was much needed but it is going to be SO hard to get back into the swing, come mid-August.  Just thinking about it makes me want to crawl into a dark hole somewhere, plug my ears, and compulsively chant “LALALALALALALALA”.

Really.

This is what school makes me feel like :(

Miscellaneous Week in Review

got_to_peeWell, here it is, Friday night and I finally have a few moments to spill my brain onto paper, errr, pixels.  Our usual four-person-team at work was down by two all week (one unfortunately off to greener professional fields, another off on vacation) so it has been crazier than usual.  Two good work points though, even in these challenging economic times, we have been given the green light to go ahead and fill person #4′s newly vacated spot, and I also received a small promotion.  I guess technically “small” “medium” or “large” are pretty arbitrary quantifiers, but in this case, the distinction is that the promotion is mostly nominal in the job title, and not so much about the $$$.  I continue to be grateful to have a job, to have great benefits, great coworkers, etc and choose to keep my attitudinal ass firmly planted on the bright side of things.

The house.  Oh lord, the house.  Technically we were supposed to close on June 19th but have encountered a series of delays (also, technically I was supposed to be on vacation next week MOVING).  It has been the most incredibly stressful, drawn out, soul-sucking, frustrating, overwhelming, bleak three weeks imaginable (also to which I attribute George the ulcer.)  We had hoped to get more information by close of business today, and so not sit around all weekend again twiddling our thumbs, suffering, but alas, no dice.   Our entire life pretty much is ON HOLD.  And it is making me capital-K-KRZY.

Did I mention the weather has been running a steady 105-110°?  And that our AC unit in the rental home SUCKS?  Did you know that the backs of your earlobes can sweat?

Anyway, enough pity party.

Last weekend, we went up north to do an emergency resuscitation on Gmom’s computer.  The drive is about two hours, and I realized before leaving, the longest car trip we had undertaken since the End of the Great Potty Training Wars.  IE, the first road trip wearing big girl undies.

At first, I thought I was being so smart, by insisting she potty before leaving, and also not providing her sippy cup to hold on to in the back seat as usual.   I figured hey–2 hours, what’s the big deal?  Well, an hour into the trip, George the ulcer (or was it just the voices in my head?) began insistently demanding an iced latte.  So we detoured to a convenient freeway-side drive thru.  While ordering, K asked for chocolate milk and by reflex, I nonchalantly ordered it, and then stuck a straw in there and gave it to her.  Whereupon she immediately downed all 8 ounces.  Yeah, I know, rookie error.  See, FF and I were so preoccupied chewing over the house situation, and trying not to LOSE OUR MINDS over the constant stream of chatter/complaints from the back seat, that we didn’t even think of the trip-bladder issues.

Well, I’m sure you know where this is headed.  She made it about another half hour and then the complaints started taking on a new tone and urgency.  I was so hoping that she could just hold it til we got into town, but over the next 10 minutes, she really started freaking out.  And also, FF had to take that car seat apart once before because of an early potty-training accident, and it practically took a PhD, divine intervention, and an engineering manual to put the damn thing back together.

So I decided I would have to pull off at the next exit and introduce her to the fine art of roadside peeing.  Because yes, in another typical rookie maneuver, I decided not to bring the portable potty chair–again thinking “hey, it’s only 2 hours!”  IDIOT.  It took about 5 minutes to get to the next exit, and by that time, she had escalated to a constant whine/fuss, and then she started spontaneously clapping.  FF and I were like, WTF?!  It kinda freaked us out at first, hahaha.  For some reason, it seemed to help her cope, so she continued to fuss, and clap, whilst FF started querying me on how exactly I was planning to orchestrate roadside peeing with a 3 year old girl.  I think I said something like, “geez, pull down her pants and show her how to squat, how complicated can it be???”

So we got pulled off to the side of the road and while unbuckling her, I explained to K that she was going to have to just pee outside this time, since we couldn’t make it to a potty in time.  She was very puzzled but going along with it, until I pulled down her pants and showed her how to squat down, and I said, “ok now lets pull your shorts out of the way and then you can just tinkle right here on the grass”.  And she looks at me and says “the grass LIKES THAT?”

And the poor kid got points for technique, but not so much for aim–she got her pants and shoes wet.  So it then became a clean up and re-dress maneuver.

But….

the carseat triumphed and remained dry.

Night Off

Well, I am taking the night off from packing.  I have made a pretty good dent in the process which is good since we found out yesterday that we may close even earlier than our original anticipated June 19th target date.  Still a lot of logistics to work out but fortunately we don’t have to be completely out of our rental until July 7th.  *gasp*

K has been struggling with some kind of cold and just running us totally ragged.  It’s not that she is that sick overall, but she is not sleeping well, not eating much, alternating between cranky/hyper/whiney, and basically wants your attention 100% of her waking hours instead of normal where she spends great blocks of time playing elaborate pretend games on her own.  It is making me crazy (and exhausted).

She was sent off for timeouts about 6 times tonight, which is usually quite a rarity.   I was getting to that borderline crazy-mom’s-gonna-snap-thing tonight so I finally sat her down next to me with a catalog of kids toys to look through while “mom and dad were on a short play break” to generally zone out and finish watching Mythbusters.

Thank god she’s in bed now.  For at least about 23 minutes or so (just an estimate) anyway.

Purgatory

Disclaimer: I know next to nothing about Catholocism.  But I’m starting to believe in the notion of purgatory in terms of endless.torturous.waiting.

Waiting for house ‘stuff’ to happen.

Waiting for grades. (ARG! THIS IS ESPECIALLY AWFUL FOR US OCD-TYPE PEOPLE!)

Waiting for the work semester to end so that I can finally begin to catch up and start working on summer projects.

Waiting for some kind of divine inspiration to hit my daughter and convince her that using toilets at home really CAN BE  just as cool as while out shopping/restaurants/etc.

Anyhoo, here’s a picture for no real reason other than it made me laugh today.
